Origin of the Project
Our project is based on the vineyard with a somewhat idealistic raising and the recuperation of plots with plants of an advanced age; relying on artisanal craftsmanship, sustainability and environmentally friendly viticulture.
The vines, which are very old and of different varieties, the majority being plants of the Mencia variety, are located in an area with very specific characteristics, slope and orientation especially, because of which their frank composition results in a sometimes gritty nature. After years of implementation, the vineyard has been forced to adapt to conditions that has forged it into something unique and exceptional.
Investigating with Feet in the Soil
In addition to our passion for Mencia, and our insane manner of interpreting it, the occasions are many in which we conduct various tests and experiments with what our land offers us. In the majority of our vineyards we find great diversity of varieties, among those found are: Merenzao, Godello, Dona Branca, Brancellao, Mencía, Garnacha Tintorera, Tempranillo… and some other varieties that we have not yet been able to recognize.
A Wine of the People
In El Bierzo many friends lend us a hand not only in the harvest but in other work as well. There is always someone with whom we joke with using this region’s vernacular. This is the case with Cachicán, which comes to be the foreman of the harvest crew, which usually has a somewhat negative condition among the harvesters, since it’s usually him that pushes them to achieve a greater profitability.
In this case a joke that emerged during the harvest, a joke with which we pay homage to many many people who have made it their job to sculpt a vineyard that all at once makes us feel proud and privileged.
A New Dream: Cachicán
Mencía is our passion on which we investigate and experiment, which is why in 2013 we decided to do a small production with grapes that were much less ripe, creating fermentation at lower temperatures to prevent the removal of herbaceous aromas and other aromas that are excessively astringent.
Cachicán was also the first production in which the newest “demente,” Bruno Arias, actively participated, having already embraced Demencia passionately since October of 2012.
The Final Result
Cachicán 2013 was our first experience with this wine, packaging only 85 bottles, which we happily sold with great success. Now in 2014, we decided to ferment in oak barrels, but we also filled a barrel closed, such to undertake a comprehensive production of the same. I incubated without any addition, not even sulphite.
Now, we want to expand this project to a larger number of bottles, mixing Mencia along with other varieties in Villafranca del Bierzo, and improving the process based on our experience, and this is our new dream for 2014 vintage.
How we will allocate your contributions
All the money earned from the contributions will be devoted entirely to the costs of buying, transporting and processing the grapes, as well as the bottling and labeling of what will become the wine bottles.
About the rewards
The wines and their rewards will be delivered without shipping costs for Peninsular Spain. The price per bottle is in a very advantageous and economic condition as part of this project through this system of crowdfunding.
